In October 2024, Dr. Karla Kaun participated in an Advocacy Forum on Basic Addiction Science Research at the annual Society for Neuroscience conference with Dr. Omar Abubaker and Dr. Eric Nestler. They discussed how change only happens as a result of concerted communication of our research to the public, health care workers, educators and politicians. The culmination of these thoughts were written into an article just published in The Transmitter: Neuroscientists need to do better at explaining basic mental health research.
The take-home message is that the knowledge gap between scientists, health-care professionals, policymakers and people with mental health conditions is growing, slowing the translation of basic science to new treatments. Like lawyers learning to present a case to the court, scientists should learn to educate nonscientists about their findings.
