During her time as an exchange student completing her Master's from University of Cologne, Anne Oepen investigated how natural variation in the foraging gene alters acute sensitivity, memory and metabolism of pharmacological doses of ethanol. In collaboration with MPP graduate student Jamie Catalano and lab manager Reza Azanchi, she showed that rovers show a decreased ethanol-induced hyperactivity response, reduced memory for the rewarding properties of ethanol, and enhanced ethanol metabolism. This work is published as part of a special issue of Journal of Neurogenetics to honor Dr. Marla Sokolowski.
